FAQ

Be sure to read the entire Race Details page in addition to this FAQ to make sure you have all the necessary info about The Smuttynose Rockfest Half Marathon & 5k!

Packet pickup/registration is from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on the morning of the race, so we suggest arriving no later than 6:30 a.m. to ensure you have time to park, pick up your bib, and get to the starting line before 8 a.m.
Please plan to line up in the start corral by 7:45 a.m. Please stand in the area of the corral marked by a sign that corresponds to your pace time.
A common rule of thumb is to take your 5k pace and add 40 seconds. For example, if you run a 31 minute 5k, that averages to a pace of 10 minutes per mile. Your half marathon pace would then be about 10:40 per mile.
The time limit for the course is 3 hours & 15 minutes. This is about a 15 minute per mile pace. We have strict rules from the State DOT and the towns about how long the course can be open. Participants found on mile 6 on the course at a slower rate than 15 minutes per mile will be asked to turn around and head back to the finish. They will still get a time and medal.
Because wearing headphones greatly reduces your ability to hear race marshals and car traffic, we strongly discourage their use on the course.
There are two races: a 5k (3.1 miles) and a half-marathon (13.1 miles). The course is certified, accurate and well-marked.
Yes, you may elect to drop down from the half marathon to the 5k. There will be no rebate or price difference. Please contact linda@locorunning.com ASAP if you’d like to switch.
The half marathon course is certified and accurate according to USATF standards. However your GPS measurement of the course is bound to be different and will most likely show the distance covered to be “long.” This is normal, and here’s a very technical explanation why: In GPS We Trust.
For both the Half and 5k, prizes are awarded to the top 3 men and women finishers overall, and to the top 3 men and women in the following categories: 18 & Under, 19-29, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. Prizes will not be mailed and must be picked up at the red “Awards” tent after the race.

Prizes usually consist of special apparel from Smuttynose and Loco Races, in addition to a 6-pack of craft beer (21+ only).

We’re sorry, but there are no refunds, transfers or deferrals.
For the start and finish, bathrooms are located near the Sea Shell Stage.
At packet pick-up/registration, there will be porta-potties.
In the parking areas, the “North” and “South” beach bath houses will be open.
Along the course, the State Park bath houses are at Miles 4, 6.5, and 11. We’ll also have porta-potties at the water stops.
Half:  There will be water stops at Miles 2, 4, 6.5 (+Gatorade), 8.5 (+Gatorade & energy gel), and 10.5.
5k:  There will be one water stop at Mile 2.
There are no changing facilities available, so please show up ready to run.
Since the course is closed to all auto traffic, we strongly suggest that spectators stay right in the beach area for the best viewing. If you watch the start at the intersection of C or D Street and Ashworth Avenue, it’s then a simple 1-minute walk to see the race again at Mile 1, Mile 4, and the finish.
NO SPECTATOR VEHICLES ALLOWED ON OR NEAR THE COURSE – Due to large traffic issues our host towns have asked us to eliminate spectator vehicles on Hampton and North Hampton town roads. Our permit is based on your cooperation with this policy. Please do not jeopardize future races by attempting to drive on the course during the race. Areas along the course will be posted with no parking signs and you may be towed!
The majority of the course roads are closed for the half marathon and entirely for the 5
k. However, a couple of essential roads must remain open to car traffic. In those instances, there will be a lane of cones in the road for the runners. Please run within the cones for your own safety.
Yes, There will be a bag check tent near the registration area and you must return there to pick up your bag after the race. Articles of clothing that are left unclaimed after the race will be donated to a local homeless shelter. Loco Races is not liable for any losses or theft that may occur. Please be sure to pick up your bag by noon.
No, for safety reasons, strollers are not allowed on the course.
No, dogs are not allowed on the course.
Shirts and fleeces are available in women’s (S-XL) and men’s (S-XXL) sizes. You select a size during online registration but we allow you to choose a different size at packet pick-up because we know that sometimes shirts fit a little differently than you expected. However, because people can change their minds at the last minute, we don’t actually know how many of each size to order. We do our best to estimate (and we even order extras), but sometimes we run out of a particular size. So, if it’s really important that you get a specific size, be sure to arrive at packet pick-up as early as possible on Saturday.
